February 2024 Demonstration

Our demonstrator was Eva Cincotta.

The meeting was held in the Guild Hall, First Congregational Church (middle side door), Sanborn Street, Reading, Wednesday February 14th, 2024 at 7:30 p.m.

We have some photographs of the event in case you could not make it there in person.

Eva demonstrated how to complete an oil landscape in one sitting.

Before she started the demo, she cautioned that, though she uses a photographic reference, the photograph is not the painting.

Eva and her setup.

Here is a closer look at her setup.

Eva

And a closer look at her toned canvas.

Eva

We had a small, but fully engaged audience in spite of the cold weather.

Eva

Eva mentioned that starting on a toned canvas forces her to put down color.

Eva

Eva suggested using the book, "Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting"
It is the go-to reference for painting. In the book, he describes 4 values,
From brightest to darkest they are: Sky, Horizontal, Slanting, Vertical.
Eva showed us a sketch indicating which parts of a painting are which values.

Eva

She also had a teaching aid about the effect of atmosphere on the painting.
The direction of view effects the colors and values of the paint.
She also mentioned that there is perspective in the atmosphere.

Eva

Here is the progress so far.

Eva

Eva points out a detail in her reference photo.

Eva

Eva checks out the color scheme against her color wheel.
"We have a green painting", she said.

Eva

So she added some yellow and blue in the sky.
