Our demonstrator was Traci Thayne Corbett.
The meeting was held in the Guild Hall, First Congregational Church (middle side door), Sanborn Street, Reading, Wednesday February 12th, 2025 at 7:30 p.m.
Traci demonstrated her oil landscape technique.
We have some photographs of the event in case you could not make it there in person.
Traci began with an informal conversation about her painting style.
Her subject matter for the demo is the painting she is sitting next to.
She did that painting using a photograph that is on her tablet.
Traci creates the painting composition by manipulating the photograph.
She finds it easier to finalize the composition in the reference photo.
Here is the photographic reference for the painting.
Traci works on gesso board that she has toned to a sepia color.
She likes gesso board because of the smooth surface it presents.
In this photo she has begun outlining the structure of the painting.
Traci keeps the drawing loose, but warned that loose does not mean fast.
She uses a slow and deliberate pace without making the drawing tight.
In this photo, you can see that the drawing is largely complete.
Starting to lay in the basic colors.
Making progress on putting in the basic shapes and colors.
Here is a closeup of the painting with most of the background in place.
At this point, Traci swapped the demo painting for another version of the
painting that is the same composition but is in a more finished state.
Close up of the new version of the painting.
She starts painting with thicker paint than she was using before.
Traci points to a section of the canvas that still shows the toned background.
She continues to work on that area.
The two paintings side by side.
Traci points to some edges that she would change when she finishes the painting.
Traci Thayne Corbett is best known for bold compositions and expressive brushwork which she employs to depict rustic marine scenes, landscapes and portraits. Her work is painterly, with the textures creating a sense of emotion and movement.
Traci earned her BFA from Clark University, and has continued her studies with Steve Forster, Mark Hayden, Daniel Green and Alyssa Monks. She is a juried member of both the Rockport and North Shore Art Associations. She paints "en plein air" as well as in the studio, finding each offers unique opportunities for growth and enjoyment.
Additionally, Traci is the Executive Director of Cape Ann Art Haven and Vice President of Cape Ann Plein Air. She lives in Gloucester, MA with her husband, daughter & their dog :)
