Many of his maritime-themed pieces are a result of research on specific ship construction plans and port scenes. Besides his plein air sketches or pencil studies, Steve has a large collection of reference books, ship construction plans and the model ships he has built to compose his paintings. His painting style is "painterly" adding detail in the process.
